Let me tell you a little bit about my dad or Pappy to all of the little ones. Today’s his birthday and so, of course, it got me thinking about my dad and just how much we all love him.
We don’t just love him because he’s sweet but he is genuine, sincere, sees the positives in people, and loves to spread kindness. My dad loves to talk to people. Growing up, my dad would love to approach people, especially young families, and compliment them. He would tell them how he loves to see sweet, loving families or tell them how cute the kids were. I was so shy when I was little seeing him approach and connect with these strangers made me uncomfortable. Now as an adult, I see how important it is to do these kinds of things. When someone approaches me in a similar fashion and compliments the children or our family I swell with pride and it makes my whole day better. Or when a complete stranger helped me load my groceries at the check out line when I had a baby strapped to me and a toddler grabbing all of the candy and toys they make so accessible. These type of interactions fill me with positivity and restore my faith in humanity.
The funny thing about my dad talking and connecting to family, friends, acquaintances, or just about anyone, is that my dad was an incredibly shy person growing up. He told us he was so shy and nervous about new situations he didn’t even want to spend the night with his own grandmother. It made me realize that going out of your way to show kindness has nothing to do with our own insecurities and actually most people are more aware of their own insecurities than they are of others’.
Knowing how good it makes me feel when someone shows me even small kindness, I’ve been trying to put myself out there more and forget my own insecurity and reach out and show kindness to others. Even if it’s something as simple as telling someone you like their shirt or fawn over their little one. Being a mother to little ones who watch everything has only reinforced this.
As we only have just under three months left of the year, I’m not going to wait for the new year, I’m going to start now and try to create a little bit of positivity for someone else every day. I hope you’ll get inspired by my dad too and look for ways spread joy and kindness.
Oh and happy birthday, Dad!!
